Why Firing Bo Perasol May Not be the Best Idea for the Blue Eagles

I'll be really honest. When Bo Perasol came in as head coach for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, I had my doubts. Sure, he had his background as the head coach of the Powerade Tigers, but other than that, he hasn't done anything particularly amazing when it's come to his coaching career. So when Bo Perasol came in as coach, one question circled around my mind.

Why Bo?

2 and a half seasons after, still, one question circles around my mind.

WHY. BO?

These past 2 and a half seasons has been so frustrating for Ateneo Blue Eagles fans such as I. It's not just because Ateneo hasn't won any championships. I'm pretty sure the community has had worse. There were the Dark Ages, and the drought which the Blue Eagles had from 2003 - 2007. So why the frustration?

It's because of how the Blue Eagles got those wins.

Sure, Ateneo won 11 wins last year, and they have 4 wins out of a possible 7 so far this year, but at what cost? Games where your best player bails you out? Games where your best player is asked to do everything once more? Games where you go to your best player just because "He's our leader, he's bailed us out in the past"? Lagi na lang ba si best player magpapapanalo sa Ateneo?

It's always been about best player. You have so much weapons, yet you choose to place all the responsibilities on best player. Yes, he is the most valuable and he is your best player, but Basketball is a team sport. Come on now. This is why we, the fans, want you out so badly. #BoLeave.

Waaaaaaaaaaait a minute. Hold your horses.

I know I've said all of those things, and I'm sure it's not only me who's actually wanted Bo to be replaced as head coach. It's all over the internet. Heck, the Atenista group in Facebook is filled with threads discussing the potential termination of Bo Perasol as the Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach. But you know, what? Let me go in Bo's defense for once. With that, let me say..

Let's not fire Bo Perasol.

It's a bad idea.

It really is.

Why?

First, you have to consider that Bo Perasol has actually had a good relationship when it has come to his players. From what I know, I haven't heard players hating Coach. Sure, they've had some issues when it has come to the plays that he has run, but hate him? Despise him? Not listen to him? Nope. Coach Bo has actually had the locker room in control. This isn't just based off what I hear from various sources out there. This is also from my experience of actually interviewing the players as well. They trust the decisions of the coaching staff, and they know that it starts with them. Matt Nieto said so himself in a recent interview, "It should come from us. It should not come from the coaches. Kasi, hindi naman yung coaches naglalaro eh, kami."

Second, the potential has shown itself in spurts when it has come to the offense of the Blue Eagles. Think about it. Watch the first half of the Ateneo-La Salle game. GAHD. The way the ball was moving around in that half. BEAUTIFUL. BASKETBALL. The second half was frustrating, yes, but the potential is there right?

Third, it's the last year of his contract anyway. Let him ride it out. Firing him will make things complicated not only for the team, but also for management. Then comes my last point, and arguably the most important one.

The players. The players who Coach Bo coaches are STUDENTS.

Let that sink in.

The players who Coach Bo coaches, are STUDENTS. They're amateurs. They aren't professionals (yet). They're students who represent the school with all that they have got, and at the same time study the lessons that are given to them in school. Plus, other than all of those commitments which they have to fulfill, comes the pressure from the Ateneo community.

Alam mo, ako nga mismo nappressure na para sa players mismo eh. Paano pa kaya sila?

Especially right now, the pressure which is on the shoulders of the Blue Eagles must be INSANE. AS IN. Just imagine the things that must be going on inside the heads of the players of the Blue and White.

Bwiset yan, talo sa La Salle. Late na ako makakauwi. May paper na due bukas. Shet, may long test pa pala akong kailangang aralin. SHET MIDTERMS SEASON NA. UGH.

If these guys have broken down, I wouldn't be surprised.  The amount of pressure on the Blue Eagles? INSANE. So just imagine what will circle inside their heads if Coach Bo is fired as Head Coach of the Blue Eagles.

They have to worry about their losses. They have to worry about what time they'll get home. They have to worry about their academic requirements. They have to stress out on a new system which will be implemented by a new coach. They have to worry about how the team will be after all of the drama. And the list goes on.

These players are human beings after all. They're not just basketball players who entertain fans. They're not just robots who are programmed to win games. Basketball isn't a sport played by robots. It's a sport played by humans. Humans who have feelings. Humans who have emotions. Humans who go through the daily grind called life.

So, to end this article, I would like to make a plea to the Ateneo community.

Take it easy on the players. Take it easy on the team.

Yes, the results being produced by the team right now isn't ideal. Yes, the kind of offense being run recently has dealt more stress than wins to the team. But, do you really want to add to the stress of Ateneo? It's already bad as it is.

Win or lose, it's the school we choose. #OBF

  1. Win or lose, it's the school we choose. Not the coach.... Palayasin na Otana..........

  2. Sooner or later we will have to realize that Perasol is not fit for a collegiate coaching position. He has no developmental bent and he poorly uses the hands that he has been dealt. Pros siguro pwede pa siya pero for college, let's stop wasting each others time..

The effects of Goldwin Monteverde's reported resignation from Adamson

On the afternoon of April 11, 2017, SPIN.ph reported that coach Goldwin Monteverde has resigned from his position as head coach of the Adamson Baby Falcons. Rumors of coach Goldwin's resignation has been going around High School basketball circles, so the news of the resignation didn't come as that much of a surprise for insiders. (Photo Credit: Hazel Siy) But for fans, the move came as quite the surprise. After all, the Baby Falcons were still projected to contend for a championship despite the controversial end that they had to their Season 79 campaign. They weren't losing that much key players to graduation, and the desire for redemption was the most important part in all of this. The fact of the matter is, Goldwin Monteverde could very well be going out of the Adamson basketball program. This move creates then a number of effects not just for the San Marcelino-based school, but also the rest of High School basketball.  1. The effect it has on the Adamson Ju

Troy Mallillin is a Blue Eagle. Now what?

(Photo Credit: Janine Torre, The GUIDON) Against the JRU Heavy Bombers, Troy Mallillin finally made his much awaited debut as a Blue Eagle. Just seeing him in uniform was already enough for fans of the Blue Eagles to go wild. Seeing a NCAA Juniors MVP wear an Ateneo jersey feels weird, for any fan. Seeing a former La Salle Greenhills player wear the blue and white? It's like an Ateneo High School boy wearing a La Salle jersey. Oh.. wait... Obviously, any Atenean is brimming with excitement right now after managing to secure (or is it really secure?) the services of the former NCAA Juniors MVP. But what else are the other implications of Troy Mallillin taking his talents to Katipunan? Let's break it down: In the short term Right now, don't expect Troy to get a lot of minutes. As mentioned before , Ateneo is filled with a number of forwards in Mike Nieto, Vince Tolentino and Raffy Verano. Shaun Ildefonso is no longer in that fray of forwards after taking his talen
