Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup Morning Rundown: So, what happened?

It's been a while since we've had a rundown. With the SEABA tournament out of the way (congrats Gilas!), it's time to go back to some Collegiate Basketball action.

So, what's happened in the Filoil Flying V tournament in the past week?

La Salle and UST had a (kind of) brawl!

Just last week, Marvin Lee and new Green Archer Ramil Tero were nearly involved in a brawl in the blowout win of La Salle against the struggling UST Growling Tigers. The worst part in all of this is how the brawl happened near the end of the game, where the result of the game was set in stone already.

This is a very bad look for a UST team that looks like it's going to struggle immensely this upcoming Season 80. Frustrations are only going to boil even further as they try to find ways to win, and with the personnel that they have, it's going to be quite the task.

For the case of La Salle, this should serve as a lesson for them. They're a dominant team entering the upcoming season, but they can't talk TOO much trash. It could very well bite them back.

No way to go but UP

The Fighting Maroons made their pre-season debut, and boy, it was quite the treat. They managed to eke out back to back wins, and both victories were pretty respectable. Juan Gomez de Liano looks like a complete stud, while the rest of the UP team looks set to contend for a Final Four slot.

That's not to say that there's not work to be done. They still have to figure out how to fix their rotation in the front court, and managing Juan GDL and Paul Desiderio, both ball-dominant players, is going to be a challenge for Coach Bo. Considering that Perasol has coached a team with Kiefer Ravena a billion other guards, this is nothing new for him. UP fans should pray though that he succeeds this time.

Lyceum and La Salle had an EPIC overtime game

This was a game that literally went down the wire. Lyceum had their chances to tie the game during the final seconds of the game, but DLSU's defense managed to hold up. What hurt even more for Lyceum is how Ben Mbala fouled out during overtime, but the Pirates could not capitalize.

For La Salle, this was a good character building win for them. Considering that they're still on the lookout for a second option, Ricci Rivero stepping up in the clutch is a great sign for them. Andrei Caracut was great as well in the extra period.

Lyceum is headed towards the right direction despite the loss. CJ Perez is a monster, and he's going to be a handful for the rest of the NCAA. The challenge is whether or not he'll be able to make the rest of his team better. With how things have been going, the likely answer to that question could very well be a yes.

Adamson just continues to roll

After winning against the NU Bulldogs last Friday, the Soaring Falcons now sport of a 5-0 record in the preseason tourney to stand as the team with the most wins. This is a great sign for Adamson considering that they're projected to be one of the contenders for Season 80 of the UAAP. Plenty of reasons to be excited about this Adamson team.

Time to press the panic button, Letran?

The Knights continue to be winless in the preseason tournament after losing against the Perpetual Help Atlas by just one point last Friday. Sure, they didn't play their best player in Rey Nambatac against the Atlas, but the inability to win is alarming.

The UST Tiger Cubs are serious business

The Tiger Cubs were one game away from a Final Four slot last year, but a horrible loss against the DLSZ Junior Archers destroyed those dreams of theirs. With a win against reigning champions FEU, UST looks like dark-horse contenders early on. Inand Fornillos is a monster, and he looks like a guy who will contend for MVP.

The effects of Goldwin Monteverde's reported resignation from Adamson

On the afternoon of April 11, 2017, SPIN.ph reported that coach Goldwin Monteverde has resigned from his position as head coach of the Adamson Baby Falcons. Rumors of coach Goldwin's resignation has been going around High School basketball circles, so the news of the resignation didn't come as that much of a surprise for insiders. (Photo Credit: Hazel Siy) But for fans, the move came as quite the surprise. After all, the Baby Falcons were still projected to contend for a championship despite the controversial end that they had to their Season 79 campaign. They weren't losing that much key players to graduation, and the desire for redemption was the most important part in all of this. The fact of the matter is, Goldwin Monteverde could very well be going out of the Adamson basketball program. This move creates then a number of effects not just for the San Marcelino-based school, but also the rest of High School basketball.  1. The effect it has on the Adamson Ju

Open Letter To The San Miguel Beermen

NOTE: This article isn't exactly in a form of a letter. The look of frustration beckons. (credits to Interaksyon.com)             To be honest, I have never been a die hard San Miguel Beermen fan until the season of their Governors’ Cup championship against the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters. Sure, they were my very first favorite PBA team, but the only reason for that was because Olsen Racela’s son was a friend and a batch mate. Despite that though, SMB has been my top favorite team. I may root for Alaska, RoS and at times Air 21, but the San Miguel Beermen will always be my top team.             The very first time that the Beermen broke my heart was when they lost an epic 7 game series against the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters in the 2012 Philippine Cup, back when they were still called the Petron Blaze Boosters. Despite that, I still continued to root for the team. Yet, heart break stil came. And another. And another. Then Renaldo Balkman chokes away Petron’s champion
