Ateneo Blue Eagles def. UE Red Warriors 83-65
Notable players:
Thirdy Ravena (21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 3 turnovers): He just keeps on proving to everyone that he is more than capable of putting up consistent numbers and being an asset to this team. He was able to lessen on his turnovers which just shows that he’s constantly working on his game as each day progresses.Matt Nieto (11 points, 3 assists): One half of the dynamic duo known as the Nieto brothers showed that he can play a steady game and facilitate all throughout as the playmaker of the team. He played good team basketball and went out there looking for good options for his teammates.
Alvin Pasaol (22 points, 3/8 3pt FG, 4 TOs): He just went out there and was totally a knockdown scorer for the red warriors. He converted and contributed in several aspects whether it be slashing, scoring or shooting. Even if he knocked down 3 long bombs, he could have been slightly more careful with his turnovers which may have even brought them closer in terms of points.
Nick Abanto (10 points, 9 rebounds, 5/7 FG): Coming off the bench he shot at an efficient rate paired with a respectable amount of rebounds in order to aid his team but although it wasn’t enough, the red warriors could surely use this efficiency and consistency
Quick Analysis:
- If it weren’t for the knockdown scoring of Pasaol and efficiency of Abanto it would’ve been an even greater blowout for the Blue Eagles. Although the Red Warriors were able to put up a fight some time in the 3rd quarter, it wasn’t enough to hold down the fire burning from within Ateneo.- Again Ateneo continues to show their adept skill in utilizing their big men and guards and positioning them to hand it off to the guards beyond the perimeter. Unlike what most would expect, instead of cutting to the lane, the bigs would instantly pop out and hold their positions there. With this, it gives more room for the athletic and quick Thirdy Ravena to drive to the lane for the basket. If he’s not able to do so, he can just kick it out to the bigs that were positioned outside prior.
- You can really see the big difference and maturity that Thirdy Ravena has been going through as a player and as the leader of the team. As from what has been seen this season, gone are the days of him chucking up random shots and trying to force the issue. You can clearly see that he thinks clearly and looks for the best possible option to go to for himself or teammate to pass to. Although he still has a small turnover problem, judging by his output for the past few games, he’ll further improve on it as the season moves on.
- UE was able to create a somewhat close game just by sheer scoring led by Pasaol. Without that it would’ve been likely that they got blown out even more and the margin would have been bigger. Even with his scoring together with Abanto’s contributions on both sides of the floor, it would’ve aided their squad if they had spread the floor even more and given more chances to their guards such as Philip Manalang who can so easily drive and slice through the lane.
- Ateneo just simply outplayed UE in every aspect by recording more total assists, rebounds, less turnovers and at a better efficiency. Even if UE is now at 0-4, they are more than capable of turning that around with talented players such as Pasaol and Abanta but they just need to figure out a way on how they can utilize their others players. Coach Pumaren can also try using his fast and frisky guards to be able to run the pace at a fast rate and make use of his relatively young lineup. For Ateneo, things are looking great. Now with 4 games down in the season and the only undefeated team right now, things can only get better for their squad especially how cohesive and fundamentally sound they’ve all been playing. Things get better yes but not easier, they need to play consistent, play better, play harder so that they can bring out the full potential of their lineup.
